Trane XB13 Gas Package Unit, Bowling Green, KY

Heat Exchanger failure or as the technicians always put it, a busted heat exchanger, is the most common reason for replacement of a package unit.  Package units in Southern Kentucky are most likely to be found on a home with a low crawlspace or a commercial building roof.

Due to the entire heating and cooling system being outside: 1.) Package units are usually not as efficient as a split systems (some are rated very close in air conditioning efficiency, but heating efficiency is almost always lower).  2.)  Package units don't have the track record of lasting as long as split systems do.  3.) If one section of a pacakge unit (heating or cooling) needs replaced, both sections (heating and cooling) are in the same box and homeowners usually end up replacing the whole unit with a more efficient model.

The Trane XB13 Gas Package unit in this example is close to 30% more efficient than the old Ruud Gas Package unit, on air conditioning.  On heating these two systems were very close in efficiency 78 to 80% AFUE.  Of course energy savings is a big part of this story; but the 1 year labor, 10 year parts, and 10 year compressor warranty of the new Trane Gas Pacakge unit means the homeowner will likely not have as many repairs as they have had either.
